You need a passport that is valid at least six months after the excavation period. If your passport will expire in the near future, it is advisable to apply for a new one to avoid problems. It is recommended that you make a photocopy of your passport and store it separately during your entire stay in Israel.

Visa

Most European (EU and Switzerland) and North American citizens do not have to apply for a visa in advance to enter Israel, visas are issued upon arrival at Tel Aviv airport. Tourists are usually allowed a three-month stay. However, for citizens of some countries, it is necessary to apply for a visa at the local Israeli embassy well (i.e., months!) in advance. Please let Stefan Münger know, if you need assistance in getting a visa.

The local currency in Israel is New Israeli Shekel (NIS). It is possible to change your own currency to Shekels before you leave home, but for many foreign currencies you will receive a better exchange rate in Israel. There are many exchange counters and banks at the airport and in Tiberias. It is also possible to draw money from ATMs with international credit cards (consult your bank or credit card company about fees!). Because we will offer full board during the entire excavation period, you do not need large amounts of money. According to our experience, ice cream and beverages cause the largest expenses. Those who want to make an overnight excursion during the free weekend will need to pay all the expenses themselves.

Flights

Team members who are accepted to the 2023 Kinneret Regional Project campaign must organize their own flights to and from Israel. No group flights are planned from our side. After application deadline is passed it will be easy to find other team members from the same region and arrange joint flights. You are expected to arrive at the Tabgha Pilgerhaus by late evening of Sunday, July 23, 2023 (22:00 h at the latest). Note that dinner is served only until ca. 19:30h. Therefore late arrivals should organize their evening meal on the way. In any case we ask team-members arriving late to notify the directors.

We do not organize transfers from and to the airport. Make sure to travel in groups by bus and train. You need about 4 hours of transfer time between airport and Pilgerhaus Tabgha, respectively.

We ask you to provide the following information no later than July 1, 2023: Arrival and departure date, arrival and departure time, flight numbers. Please send all your travel details to Laura Wörner in due time!

Traveling to Karei Deshe Guest House

The Tabgha Pilgerhaus is located ca. 13 km North of Tiberias not far from the main road to the North. If you travel by bus (most buses from Tiberias to the North will do – but ask in advance!), you need to get out at the Kfar Nahum Junction where roads 90 and 87 split. From there, it is a ca. 10 minutes walk towards south: Walk to the end of the road until the white gate to the premises of Tabgha Pilgerhaus (see also the satellite image below; click on the blue icons to find it). Taxis from the bus station at Tiberias should not be too expensive, especially if you travel in small groups (ca. 100 Shekels; always negotiate the price in advance!). Although buses in Israel are normally safe, you need to be careful and attentive. – We strongly discourage you from hitch-hiking!
